History

Thebarton theatre is rich in cultural history. The site was originally the ‘old’ Town Hall and was designed by Withall & Wells and built in 1885. However, the site was not adequate so the council bought the land on the corner of Henley Beach Road and Taylor’s Road. In 1926, the theatre was constructed and then it opened on Monday 11 June 1928 by Mayor HS Hatwell Esq and was designed to be the main venue for concerts, films and theatre performances across South Australia. At this time, Thebarton was called the Town Hall and Municipal Office and the building was built by Thebarton Council which cost £30,000.

The theatre was known for its incredible lighting and its elaborate design. Thebarton Theatre was designed by Kadberry and Chard, who designed over 57 theatres across Australia. The theatre is one of the only sites which remains, making it an important aspect of Australia’s theatrical history. In 1982, the theatre was listed on the South Australian Heritage Register on 23 september 1982.
